Marla Korr

Painting is my passion.  I was surrounded by art for as long as I can remember, having grown up in a family of artists.  My love of landscape painting was inspired by my father whose reverence of nature took our family each summer from New York City to the lush environs of the Hudson River Valley.  In painting a landscape, I begin the process “en plein air” where I can capture what I see and feel in the moment.  This immediate experience and sensory memory prepares me to develop my impressionistic sketches into larger paintings. Back in my studio I make a series of drawings until I work out the composition and values and then I transfer the drawing to the canvas.

Whether the subject matter is rooted in the urban, marine or rural landscape, the inspiration for my paintings springs from the transformational quality of light as it plays on the exciting variety of images and the relationship that we share with them.  I often include objects and the figure in the compositions to illustrate those relationships.  My intention is not to copy nature but to convey the myriad moods suggested by weather, time of day, and the seasons and to express the feelings that these conditions and subjects evoke in me… the joy of a warm summer day, the mystery of fog, the majesty of a sunset.  If I paint a lighthouse, my intention might be to express how it complements the shoreline as well as how it is transformed by the quality of the light as it plays with the sky and sand.

My goal as an artist is to continue to explore the subjects that inspire me and challenge my skills.  While the subjects that I choose to paint evoke personal feelings, my intention as an artist is to encourage the viewer to have their own intimate experience of the paintings.  My hope is that they will revisit them with continued pleasure and surprise.

Robert Paul Galleries is proud to be chosen to show the works of American artist Marla Korr.
