Katherine Ann Hartley In 1959, Katherine Ann Hartley was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Even though she was born into an artistic family, her mother is an accomplished water-colorist, Katherine did not take up painting until she was in her twenties. Katherine Ann Hartley learned the fundamentals of painting under the guidance of John Court, the well known portrait painter, based in the Portuguese islands of the Azores. At the advise of Mr. Court, she later studied with David Leffel of The Art Students League in New York. After studying in New York for several years she then set up her own studio in her family home back in Cape Cod. Katherine’s paintings are part of the inexhaustible still-life tradition which began with the Old Masters. Her approach is unique, in the sense that, she holds in balance the array of man-made objects and glories of nature, while bathing them in a soothing and satisfying play of light and shadows. She places the light and shadows in such a way as to organize and define the composition most effectively. Robert Paul Galleries is proud to show the works of American artist Katherine Ann Hartley.
